P0CA2: DC/DC Converter Step Down Voltage Performance
What to do
If the 12-volt battery keeps going flat, this is the answer rather than the battery — the converter is what charges it and it is falling short. Do not have a third battery fitted. Ask for the 12-volt charging voltage to be measured with the car running and a load applied; sagging under load is exactly what this describes and it will look fine unloaded.
What this code means
The DC/DC converter's step-down stage is not performing as it should.
Step down is the direction that keeps the ordinary car alive — traction pack voltage in, twelve volts out, the alternator's job. What that means when it fails, and why it presents as a 12-volt battery that keeps going flat, is at P0C38.
What is new here is that this is a performance code rather than a precondition one, and the corpus already carries the other kind. System Voltage Too Low for Voltage Step Down Conversion says the input was not high enough to convert from. This says the input was fine and the conversion itself fell short — the output sagging under load, or the stage no longer able to deliver the current the car is drawing.
The distinction decides where to look. A precondition code points at the traction pack; a performance code points at the converter.
