P0DAD: Hybrid/EV Battery Cell Balancing Circuit A Stuck On

Expect the car to lose more charge than usual while parked, and range to fall over time. This one is worth fixing rather than monitoring — the circuit is draining a battery group continuously, and the longer it runs the more likely that group is genuinely damaged by it.
What this code means
The cell balancing circuit for group A is faulty.
Cell balancing is the maintenance a traction battery performs on itself, and understanding it explains most of what owners notice about an ageing pack.
Cells in a series string drift apart. They begin nearly identical, but tiny differences in internal resistance, temperature and self-discharge accumulate over thousands of cycles until some groups hold slightly more charge than others. And a series string is governed by its weakest member in both directions: the lowest group hits the discharge floor first and stops the car using the rest, the highest hits the charging ceiling first and stops the charge. So drift does not average out — it eats the pack's usable capacity from both ends.
Balancing corrects it, and on nearly every production car it does so by throwing energy away. A small resistor is switched across the fullest groups near the top of a charge, bleeding them down until the others catch up. It is slow — hundreds of milliamps against a pack measured in tens of amp-hours — which is why it happens over hours at the end of a charge, and why a car that is never charged to full may never balance at all.
These circuits are the switches that do it, and they are a different layer from the voltage sense circuits at P0B3B. Sense circuits measure; these act. A car can measure perfectly and be unable to do anything about what it finds.
This is the most damaging fault in the whole balancing system, and it is worth understanding why, because the code reads like a minor one.
A balancing circuit stuck closed means the bleed resistor is permanently connected across this group. So the module is continuously draining a group that may be perfectly healthy — and the imbalance it eventually reports is one it created itself. Left alone, the car will keep diagnosing that group as weak, and it will keep getting weaker, because the diagnosis is doing the damage.
The second consequence is a parasitic drain the owner does feel. The resistor draws current whether the car is on, off, or parked at an airport for a fortnight, so this is one of the few pack faults that flattens a traction battery while standing. A car that loses noticeably more charge sitting than it used to, with no other symptom, is worth reading for this code.
And it can take a group below its safe floor — see P0DE6, which is the outcome, and which is a genuinely dangerous state rather than an inconvenient one.
