The burner runs cleanly once hot, but every start and stop passes through a cool, rich phase that leaves deposits — so a heater used in short bursts sooots up far faster than one run to a full cycle. Vehicles that make brief journeys in cold weather are exactly the ones that need the heater most and exactly the ones that clog it.
Most such heaters can be cleaned rather than replaced, and many manufacturers specify a periodic full-power run for precisely this reason.
