Engine slow to reach operating temperature
The temperature gauge takes an unusually long time to rise, or never reaches its normal position. Nearly always a thermostat stuck open, which costs fuel continuously.

What this usually means
Nearly always a thermostat stuck open, and it costs fuel continuously — which is why this complaint is worth acting on even though the car drives perfectly.
The mechanism explains why it is expensive rather than merely annoying. The thermostat's job is to keep coolant in the engine until it reaches operating temperature. Stuck open, coolant circulates through the radiator from the moment the engine starts, so the engine takes far longer to warm and in cold weather may never get there. The management responds by extending its warm-up enrichment, and an engine that never leaves enrichment burns more fuel every mile it covers.
Two symptoms travel with it and are useful corroboration. The heater is weak or slow, because it is fed by the same coolant — so a cold cabin and a low gauge is the pair that names the thermostat. And fuel consumption rises without any driveability complaint at all, which is often the thing that finally prompts the visit.
Distinguish it from a gauge that reads low while the engine is genuinely hot. A coolant temperature sensor reading cold produces the same needle position and the same enrichment, with no thermostat fault — and it is checked in a minute by comparing the live reading against an infrared measurement of the housing.
And on some engines a slow warm-up is normal in extreme cold, particularly efficient diesels with little waste heat to spare. The test is whether it eventually reaches its normal position on a long run; one that does is slow, one that does not is faulty.
