What to do

Nothing will feel different — this is a bookkeeping code with cheap causes. Ask for the exhaust to be checked for leaks around and before the downstream sensor first: a gasket or a rusted joint is the classic answer, and it costs a fraction of the sensor that otherwise gets replaced. If P0171-family codes are stored too, they lead and this follows.

What this code means

The fine-trim running on the downstream oxygen sensor has hit its lean limit — a second fuelling correction most people never hear about, correcting further than it is allowed to.

There are two fuel trims, and this code belongs to the quiet one. The upstream sensor runs the fast loop the corpus describes at P0171. Behind the catalyst, the downstream sensor adds a slow second opinion: a small continuous nudge that corrects for the upstream sensor's own ageing and keeps the catalyst centred in its working window. That nudge is bounded tightly, because it is meant to polish, not steer — and this code stores when polishing in the lean direction ran out of authority.

What moves the quiet trim is rarely fuelling. The honest suspect list, cheapest first: an exhaust leak between the catalyst and the sensor — each exhaust pulse's low-pressure tail draws outside air in through the smallest gap, the sensor reads oxygen that never saw combustion, and the trim chases a leanness that does not exist (the same false-air argument the corpus makes at P0420 and P2270, which is no coincidence — all three codes share this cause and frequently each other's company); the downstream sensor itself aged lazy, reporting low and slow; a catalyst near the end of its storage capacity, letting oxygen through in gulps the sensor was never meant to see; and genuine lean running last — which almost always brings the upstream family's codes along as louder witnesses.

The misdirection to resist is the P2201 shape: the sensor that reported the problem gets replaced for delivering the news. Before any part: the exhaust joints around the downstream sensor checked with the engine cold, when leaks hiss loudest and can sometimes be heard by hand.
