Exhaust sounds louder than usual
A deeper, harder note, a rasp under acceleration, or a chuffing you can hear at the kerb — the car simply sounds bigger than it did. A leak before the sensors is the version that matters, because the exhaust pulses draw fresh air in through the hole between them, the oxygen sensor reads that extra air as a lean mixture, and the engine adds fuel it does not need. So an exhaust leak commonly announces itself as a fuelling fault rather than a noise one, and gets chased through sensors that are working perfectly. Say where the noise seems loudest and whether it is worst cold, since a crack that closes as things expand is the classic manifold signature.

What this usually means
A leak before the sensors is the version that matters, and the mechanism is worth stating because it is genuinely counter-intuitive: the exhaust pulses draw fresh air in through the hole between them, the oxygen sensor reads that extra air as a lean mixture, and the engine adds fuel it does not need.
So an exhaust leak commonly announces itself as a fuelling fault rather than a noise one, and gets chased through sensors that are working perfectly. A car with lean trims, raised consumption and a slightly harder note has one fault, and it is a gasket.
Say where the noise seems loudest and whether it is worst cold, since a crack that closes as things expand is the classic manifold signature. A manifold or a downpipe joint that leaks audibly for the first few minutes and then quietens has not repaired itself; the metal has expanded and closed the gap. And check the mountings. A rubber mounting that has split lets the system hang lower and touch the body, which changes the note and produces a boom or buzz that sounds far worse than the cost of a rubber ring.
