What to do

Expect hesitation and reduced power, because the engine is being starved of fuel by a signal wire carrying voltage from the heater rather than a reading from the exhaust. If an aftermarket or universal oxygen sensor was fitted, or the exhaust has recently been worked on, say so — a signal wire spliced or bridged to a heater wire gives this code on a perfectly good sensor, and rewiring it correctly is the repair. Avoid sustained heavy load until it is fixed, since a lean mixture under load runs hot.

What this code means

The oxygen sensor's signal wire is in contact with its heater circuit. This is one of the few oxygen sensor codes that names a specific physical fault rather than a symptom, and it is worth understanding because it explains several other codes that arrive with it.

Why these two circuits are the ones that short together. A modern oxygen sensor is a four-wire device: two for the heater, two for the signal. They run in a single cable, terminate in a single connector, and inside the sensor body they are millimetres apart in an environment that reaches several hundred degrees. Nothing else on the vehicle puts a millivolt-level measurement circuit and a switched battery-voltage circuit that close together, that hot, for that long. So when insulation degrades, these are the two that meet.

What the module sees, and why the fuelling goes wrong. The heater carries battery voltage, switched. The signal is a few hundred millivolts at most. Bridge them and the signal circuit is driven to a voltage no exhaust condition could produce, so the module loses its mixture measurement entirely — and, being pinned at the high end, loses it in the rich direction. The module responds by removing fuel, and keeps removing it. So this fault typically arrives with P2196 or P0172-family codes, and the engine actually runs lean. The chain from a chafed wire to an engine hesitating under load is direct once the mechanism is clear.

The diagnostic tell is free. A signal that follows the heater's switching rather than the throttle is conclusive — nothing about exhaust oxygen would produce a reading that changes in time with a heater duty cycle.

Two causes are worth naming specifically because both are repairs rather than failures:

  • A universal or splice-in sensor fitted with the wires crossed. These are supplied without a connector and are wired in by hand, and the colour conventions are not consistent between manufacturers. A signal wire spliced to a heater wire produces this code exactly, on a brand new sensor.
  • Connector damage during exhaust work. These plugs are handled, unclipped and sometimes forced during any job involving the manifold or the front pipe, and a distorted terminal can bridge two pins that were never meant to meet.

Where neither applies, an internal short in the sensor is the usual finding — which makes this one of the few cases in this family where the sensor genuinely is the answer.
