What to do

The car will usually drive normally — this sensor does not control fuelling. If a catalytic converter fault has been diagnosed alongside this code, question it. A downstream sensor with its signal shorted to the heater looks identical to a dead converter, and this is by far the cheaper of the two. Fix the wiring or the sensor first and see whether the converter fault returns.

What this code means

The same short described at P2231, on the sensor downstream of the catalytic converter.

Position changes the consequence completely, and that is the point of a separate code. The upstream sensor controls fuelling; the downstream sensor does not. It exists to watch the catalyst, by confirming that the oxygen content coming out is steadier than what went in — which is what a working converter does to the exhaust.

So this fault does not make the engine run badly. What it does is take out catalyst monitoring, and it does so in a way that is easily misread: a downstream signal pinned at a fixed voltage looks exactly like a converter that has stopped working. A P0420 stored alongside this code is very probably not a failed catalytic converter — and that matters, because a converter is one of the most expensive emissions parts on a vehicle and this is one of the cheaper faults.

Downstream sensors also suffer this failure slightly more often than upstream ones for a mundane reason: they sit further back, under the floor, where the harness runs through the wettest and most exposed part of the vehicle and where road debris reaches it.
