Do not keep driving

The vehicle is going to stop, or has already stopped, and this is the system working as designed rather than breaking. Do not keep switching it off and on in the hope of clearing it — on most vehicles the restart lockout is the stage immediately before permanent shutdown.

If it is still running, drive it directly to a garage and do not switch off en route. Once shut down it may need recovery.

Expect to be asked whether the reductant tank has been filled with the correct fluid, and answer honestly — this fluid is not interchangeable with anything else, and the wrong liquid in the tank is a common and expensive route here.

If any emissions delete or emulator device has been fitted to this vehicle, say so. The system detected it, that is why the engine is stopping, and a repair that does not account for it will not clear the inducement.

What this code means

The selective catalytic reduction system has reached the final stage of its inducement strategy, and the engine is being shut down or prevented from restarting.

This is not a warning about a fault. It is the enforcement of one that has been ignored.

Diesel vehicles that use reductant fluid are legally required to make themselves progressively unusable when the emissions system is not working. The sequence is deliberate and escalates over hundreds of miles: a warning light, then a message, then a speed limit, then a restart lockout, and finally this — the engine stopping, or refusing to start again once it is switched off.

By the time this code sets, the driver has been told several times. That matters diagnostically, because it means the original fault is usually still stored alongside it and is often weeks old.

So this code is never the fault to fix. It is a consequence. Read what else is stored — an empty or contaminated reductant tank, a failed NOx sensor, a reductant injector that has crystallised shut, or a tampering detection — and repair that. The inducement clears when the underlying fault is repaired and the system verifies itself, which on most vehicles requires a drive cycle rather than simply clearing codes.

Be aware that tampering detection reaches here quickly and deliberately. Emulators and delete kits are detected by most modern systems, and the inducement they trigger is not a fault that can be repaired by removing the device afterwards.
