P20F4: Reductant Consumption Too Low

This means the car is using less reductant fluid than it should be — the system is not putting into the exhaust what it says it is.

The usual mechanical cause is a blocked or crystallised injector, which can often be cleaned rather than replaced. Ask about that.

If this vehicle has any emissions delete or emulator device fitted, it needs to come out. This check exists specifically to catch those — a vehicle that is not dosing uses no fluid, and no amount of spoofing hides a tank level that never falls. If you bought the car second hand and know nothing about it, this code is worth taking seriously as a sign that something was fitted.

Do not leave it. The system escalates towards a speed limit and eventually a refusal to restart.

What this code means

The system is using less reductant than the engine's operation says it should.

This is a bookkeeping check, and it is one of the cleverest things the emissions system does. The module knows how much reductant it commanded over time, and it watches the tank level fall. When the level does not drop the way the dosing record says it should, something is wrong between the two.

Crucially, this check catches faults that every other measurement misses — which is precisely why it exists.

  • The injector is blocked or crystallised, so commanded doses are not physically delivered. The module commanded them; the fluid never left.
  • A pump or line restriction produces the same shortfall.
  • The level sensor is misreporting, so the fluid is being used and the gauge is not showing it.
  • A tampering device is fitted. Emulators that suppress the SCR system are specifically what this check is designed to detect, because a vehicle not dosing at all uses no fluid, and no amount of spoofed sensor data hides an unchanging tank level.

That last point is worth stating plainly for anyone buying a used diesel. This code appearing on a vehicle with no obvious fault is a strong indication that something was fitted to defeat the emissions system.

Look under the vehicle for the injector and check whether it is delivering — that is the commonest genuine mechanical cause and it is repairable.
