P249C: Excessive Time To Enter Closed Loop Reductant Injection Control
What to do
Mention the kind of driving this car does. If most journeys are short and around town, that alone can set this code on a perfectly healthy vehicle — the exhaust never gets hot enough for the emissions system to start working properly.
Try a sustained run of half an hour at steady speed before the appointment if you can, and say whether the light went out. That single piece of information separates a usage pattern from a fault and saves diagnostic time.
If it returns regardless of how the car is driven, expect the NOx sensors to be the focus. They are the commonest genuine cause here.
What this code means
The reductant injection system took longer than allowed to start controlling itself from sensor feedback.
Closed loop means the system is metering reductant by measuring the result rather than by following a table. The downstream NOx sensor reports what actually came out of the catalyst, and the module trims the dose accordingly. Until that loop closes, the system is dosing open loop — an educated guess — and emissions are not being properly controlled.
The loop cannot close until several conditions are met, and any one of them failing produces this code:
- The catalyst has to reach operating temperature, so a thermostat stuck open or a faulty temperature sensor delays it indefinitely.
- The NOx sensors have to warm up and report valid data, which takes a heater working correctly.
- The reductant line has to be primed and delivering, so a weak pump or an air leak stalls it.
This is a timing code, so short journeys can produce it on a healthy vehicle. A car that never runs long enough for the catalyst to get hot will legitimately fail to close the loop.
Where the vehicle does get proper use, read the NOx sensor codes stored alongside it first. A slow-heating or lazy NOx sensor is by far the commonest genuine cause, and it usually declares itself in its own code.
