What to do

The car will usually drive normally, and the consequences show up elsewhere. Two things to watch for and mention: whether the car runs poorly for a while after every restart, and whether the battery goes flat when it stands for a few days. The first suggests the module is losing its learned settings at switch-off, the second that it is never powering down. Both are this circuit, and both are commonly diagnosed as something else — a worn engine in the first case, a bad battery in the second.

What this code means

The circuit through which the module monitors its own main relay is reporting something implausible.

Why a module needs to watch its own relay is not obvious until you know that modern modules do not switch off when you do. Turning the ignition off is a request, not a disconnection. The module keeps itself powered for a period afterwards and uses it: writing learned adaptations to permanent memory, finishing evaporative system tests, running cooling fans down, and closing down in an orderly way. The relay it holds closed to do that is under its own control, and this circuit is how it confirms the relay actually obeyed.

Two failure directions, both with consequences that appear later and look unrelated:

  • The relay releases too early, cutting power before the module has finished. Adaptations are not saved, so the next start runs on defaults — which feels exactly like wear or a broken part. That is the argument the corpus makes at P0949 and P2176, arriving here by a different route: a car that runs badly after every restart, with no fault that explains it, may be losing its learned values every time it is switched off.
  • The relay does not release at all, leaving the module powered indefinitely. That is a parasitic drain and a flat battery after a few days standing.

So this code is worth taking seriously despite producing no symptom while driving. The symptom arrives on the next start, or in a car park a week later.
