P2688: Fuel Supply Heater Control Circuit Low
What to do
There is probably nothing to feel, especially in warm weather — but this one is worth attending to sooner rather than later rather than being left.
Two reasons. First, this heater sits in the fuel filter housing surrounded by diesel, and a high-current circuit shorting inside a fuel system is not something to run for months. If a fuse for it has blown, it must not be replaced with a bigger one — that fuse is protecting a heavy cable in a fuel system, and a blown one means something is genuinely shorting.
Second, the other version of this fault is a heater stuck permanently on, which flattens the battery and heats fuel all summer for no reason. If your battery keeps going flat and this code is present, mention both together — that combination usually means a relay whose contacts have welded closed.
And as at P2687: even if nothing seems wrong now, get it fixed before winter. A dead fuel heater is invisible until the first hard frost, when it can leave the car unable to start at all.
What this code means
The fuel supply heater's control circuit reads below its valid range — a short to ground, or a driver output that has failed low.
What the heater does, and why a fault with no symptom in summer becomes a no-start in winter, is set out at P2687.
A short to ground on this particular circuit deserves more caution than the same fault elsewhere, for a reason that has nothing to do with electronics: this heater is mounted in the fuel filter housing, which is full of diesel. A high-current circuit shorting, arcing and heating within a fuel system is a combination worth taking seriously rather than driving around with for a month.
That makes the fuse or fusible link protecting this circuit a safety device rather than an inconvenience, and one that has blown must never be replaced with a larger one. If it blows again after replacement, the answer is to find the short, not to keep fitting fuses.
A heater stuck permanently on is the other reading and it has its own consequences. A welded relay contact leaves the element powered whenever the ignition is on: it drains the battery, and it heats fuel that does not need heating. Warm diesel is a slightly worse lubricant and a slightly less dense fuel, so a heater running all summer is quietly working against the fuel system it is meant to protect.
A diesel with unexplained battery drain and a code from this family is a stuck heater relay until proven otherwise, which is the same pattern as the intake air heater at P2606.
