You may notice nothing beyond worse fuel economy and a warning light. The car will drive. A wideband sensor is not interchangeable with an ordinary one — make sure the replacement is the correct part, and expect the connector and its wiring to be checked first, because they fail more often than the sensor does.

What this code means

The negative side of a wideband oxygen sensor's pump cell circuit is faulty.

These codes describe something a conventional oxygen sensor does not have: a current that is driven into the sensor, in both directions.

A narrowband sensor generates its own small voltage and simply reports rich or lean. A wideband sensor measures how rich or how lean, and it does that by an entirely different method: a tiny pump cell moves oxygen ions into or out of a measurement chamber, and the current required to hold that chamber at exactly the right mixture is the reading. More current means further from ideal; the direction of the current says which way.

So the module must be able to drive current both ways, and that is why there is a positive control circuit and a negative one — and why each gets its own three codes. Neither is a heater circuit, which is separate again and much more commonly faulted.

What makes this worth knowing is what a pump-cell fault looks like from the driver's seat: nothing, and then poor economy. The sensor still responds, so the car does not obviously misbehave — but the number it reports is wrong, and the module trims fuelling to match it. A wideband sensor that lies quietly is more expensive to run than one that fails outright, because a failed one gets replaced.

Sensor 3 on bank 1 is unusual placement, and worth reading literally: it is a third sensor in that bank's exhaust, downstream of the others, which on most vehicles means after a second catalyst or in a system with particulate aftertreatment. Do not assume it is the one nearest the engine.
