P2AA2: Alternative Fuel Return Line Insufficient Flow
What to do
Expect a stumble on hot restarts and worse behaviour in hot weather; the car is fine cold. Mention any recent work under the car — a return line crushed or kinked during unrelated work is a common cause and an easy one to find if somebody knows to look.
What this code means
Flow through the gaseous fuel return line is insufficient.
A return line means fuel that reaches the engine bay and is not burned goes back to the tank, and on a gas system that serves a purpose petrol return lines do not.
Circulating fuel carries heat away. An engine bay is hot, and LPG held stationary in a rail beside a hot engine will boil — which on a liquid-injection system destroys the metering, because the injector is calibrated for liquid and vapour occupies far more volume for the same mass. Keeping fuel moving keeps it liquid.
So the return line is not a pressure-relief afterthought; it is part of how the system holds the fuel in the right phase. A restricted or closed return produces exactly the fault the circulation exists to prevent: fuel boiling in the rail after a hot restart, which is why the classic symptom is a car that runs perfectly cold, is fine on a long journey, and stumbles for the first minute after a ten-minute stop at a petrol station.
That hot-restart signature is the diagnostic, and it is easy to dismiss as a fuelling glitch because it clears itself once fresh fuel has circulated.
This is the outcome where P2A9E is the circuit — the valve was commanded correctly and fuel is still not circulating, which moves the diagnosis from wiring to plumbing.
Three things restrict a return line, and all three are cheap relative to what they protect. A kinked or crushed line, which on an aftermarket installation running under the floor is a real possibility after any underbody work. A restricted filter, since some systems filter the return. Or a valve that is electrically fine and mechanically stuck, which is what the position feedback exists to catch.
Left alone it does not damage anything quickly — it degrades hot-weather and hot-restart behaviour, and the owner learns to live with it. Which is why it is worth naming the symptom precisely, because nobody reports a fault they have adapted to.
