P2AD4: Intermediate System Voltage Low
What to do
The car will drive on its normal 12-volt systems. Expect stop-start to misbehave and, on a mild hybrid, a noticeable loss of the low-speed assistance you may not have known you were relying on. Mention if the car has recently been jump-started or had battery work — 48-volt systems are unforgiving of the wrong procedure.
What this code means
The intermediate system voltage is below its limit.
"Intermediate" means a supply rail that is neither the 12-volt system nor the traction battery, and its appearance in the standard marks a real change in how cars are wired.
48-volt systems exist because 12 volts ran out of headroom. An electrically heated catalyst, an electric supercharger, an active anti-roll system or a belt-driven starter-generator each want several kilowatts — and at 12 volts several kilowatts means cable thick enough to be impractical, because current is power divided by voltage. Quadrupling the voltage quarters the current and shrinks the cable to something a harness can carry.
It is deliberately below the 60-volt threshold at which a system must be treated as high voltage, so 48-volt wiring needs no orange sheathing and no isolation monitoring — which is exactly why it gets underestimated. It will not electrocute you, but it will produce a sustained arc that 12 volts cannot, and a short across a 48-volt bus is a fire risk rather than a blown fuse.
Low intermediate voltage usually means the DC/DC converter feeding it, or the 48-volt battery itself. The car keeps running on the 12-volt system and simply loses whatever the 48-volt rail powered — most visibly the stop-start behaving oddly, or a noticeable loss of low-speed torque assistance on a mild hybrid.
