U0310: Software Incompatibility With Fuel Pump Control Module

Do not let the fuel pump be replaced on the strength of this code. That is the whole point of this page.
Nothing is broken. This means two of the car's computers are running software that does not belong together, and the fuel pump is being asked for the wrong pressure — not failing to deliver it.
The reason it gets misdiagnosed is that it feels exactly like a tired pump. The car starts, idles and drives normally, and then falls flat under hard acceleration or at high revs — a stumble, a flat spot, sometimes a misfire that only appears when the engine is working hard. That is the classic description of a failing pump, and it is not what has happened.
Replacing a fuel pump usually means dropping the fuel tank or cutting an access hole in the floor. It is an expensive way to find out that a setting was wrong.
Ask instead for the fuel pressure to be read live and compared with what the computer is asking for. A pump delivering exactly what it is asked for, while the request itself is wrong, is this fault stated as plainly as it can be — and it is a five-minute check with the right tool.
What this code means

A fuel pump control module exists because a modern pump is not simply switched on. It is driven at a variable speed to hold a commanded pressure, and that arrangement replaced the older one — a pump running flat out with a mechanical regulator returning the excess — because it is quieter, uses less current and keeps the fuel cooler.
Which means the pressure the engine module asks for and the drive the pump module applies are two halves of a control loop defined in software at both ends. A mismatch does not stop the pump. It makes the loop settle somewhere other than where it should.
And that produces a fault shape worth recognising, because it is easily read as a failing pump. Pressure that is close but not right gives an engine that starts, idles and drives, and falls short under load or at high engine speed — a flat spot at the top end, a stumble on a hard acceleration, a misfire that only appears when the engine is working. Exactly what a tiring pump feels like.
So the standing warning applies: do not authorise a fuel pump on the strength of this code. A pump replacement means dropping the tank or cutting an access hatch, and it is one of the more expensive ways to discover that a configuration was wrong.
The test that settles it is a live pressure reading compared against the commanded value — a scan tool shows both — and a pump that delivers exactly what it is asked for while the request itself is wrong is a software problem stated as clearly as it can be.
