U0329: Software Incompatibility With Steering Column Control Module
What to do
If the steering is locked and the car will not start, do not try to force it. Have it recovered.
On a keyless car there is no ignition barrel, so the steering is locked by a bolt driven in by a small motor. It is heavily interlocked, because a steering lock engaging while you were moving would be catastrophic — and it will not release unless the car is certain of its own configuration. This code means it is not certain, so it has stayed locked. That is the car being safe, not broken.
Forcing a steering lock mechanism is how a modest programming job turns into a new steering column, so leave it alone and get it recovered.
If the car does drive, this is much less urgent. Expect some stalk functions not to work, the electric steering column adjustment to be unavailable, memory positions lost, or the heated wheel and paddles to have stopped. Nothing is broken; it is a programming job.
One thing worth mentioning: if the airbag warning light is on as well, say so. The driver's airbag connection runs through this same part of the column, so the two are related rather than coincidental, and it changes what should be looked at.
What this code means
A module is running software that does not belong with the steering column control module's. See U0300 for the family and U0212 for the module itself.
A steering column module gathers an unusually mixed set of jobs, and which of them exist on a given vehicle is configuration: the stalk switches, the horn and airbag connections through the clockspring, the electric reach and rake adjustment with its memory positions, the paddle shifters, the heated wheel, and on many vehicles the electronic column lock.
Most of a mismatch is inconvenience — stalk functions that no longer work, adjustment that will not move, memory positions lost.
The column lock is the exception and it is worth separating. An electronic steering lock is a bolt driven into the column by a motor, and it exists because a keyless vehicle has no ignition barrel to lock. It is heavily interlocked precisely because engaging while the vehicle is moving would be catastrophic — so the module will not release the lock unless it is certain of the vehicle's state, and it will not release it at all if it cannot verify its own configuration.
Which gives the practical outcome: a vehicle that will not unlock its steering and therefore will not start. That is safe, and it is the correct behaviour rather than a failure, but it strands the vehicle. See U0236 for the same module going silent.
So if the vehicle is drivable, this is not urgent. If the steering is locked, it needs recovering rather than persuading — and forcing a steering lock mechanism is how a modest configuration job becomes a column replacement.
One last note. The clockspring carries the driver's airbag connection through this area, so a restraints code stored alongside this one is not a coincidence — it is the same harness, and it belongs to U0336's argument rather than this one.
