U0535: Invalid Data Received From Convenience Recall Module
What to do
The car drives normally. What you lose is the memory function — the seat, mirrors and column no longer move to your saved position, or move to the wrong one.
If a seat, mirror or steering column fault is also reported, that one is the real problem and this usually clears when it is fixed. Worth saying, because it stops the memory module being replaced unnecessarily.
If the car has had a second-hand seat, mirror or memory module fitted, mention it — a module from a better-equipped car stores settings for equipment yours does not have, and that is a coding correction rather than a repair.
What this code means
The convenience recall module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for what an invalid-data code is and why the module it names is usually the messenger rather than the culprit.
Before anything is diagnosed, establish that the vehicle actually has this equipment.
This is optional kit, and the commonest cause of a code naming it is a car that was told it has one when it does not. A body control module or gateway coded to a higher specification, a second-hand module carrying its donor vehicle's configuration, or a retrofit that was wired in but never coded — all three report equipment that is not there, and none of them is a fault in the vehicle.
Nothing is broken in that case and nothing needs replacing. The repair is a coding correction, and it is quick when somebody asks the question first.
"Convenience recall" is the memory function: the car recognising a driver and restoring their seat, mirrors, steering column and often climate and audio settings.
It is a coordinating module rather than a sensing one, which changes what an invalid-data fault means here. It publishes stored positions and requests other modules to move to them — so its data is only as good as the position feedback it collects from the seat, mirror and column modules.
Which gives the diagnostic order. If a seat, mirror or column code is stored alongside this one, that code is the fault and this is the consequence — the memory module is repeating a position it was given. Fixing the named module usually clears this.
Where it stands alone, the usual causes are the ordinary ones for a module that lives in a door or under a seat, plus configuration: a memory module from a differently-equipped vehicle stores positions for equipment this car does not have.
