Fiat's small petrol four — the Fully Integrated Robotised Engine, named for the automated line that built it — in 1.1, 1.2 and 1.4 litre forms, and the engine of the Panda, Punto, 500 and Uno across four decades.

It is about as simple as a current engine gets: belt-driven, port-injected, eight or sixteen valves, modest output. The diagnostic consequence is that almost every complaint is a consumable or a leak — coils, the crankshaft sensor, the idle actuator on older versions, or a vacuum leak producing a lean code. Scan data is thin; physical testing is the method.

The timing belt is the maintenance item that ends them, and because these cars are cheap and often old, history is frequently unknown. The 1.2 in particular is common in city use, where cold-start-dominated duty cycles cause more internal wear than the mileage suggests — the same caution that applies to the Hyundai Kappa and every other small urban engine here.
