Ford's 3.0 V6 — in the Taurus, Ranger, Escape and the Mercury equivalents, for twenty-two years.
It is the plain, durable engine of that range, and its reputation is exactly that: pushrod, cast-iron block, no timing belt, and very little to go wrong. On a car of this age the engine is rarely what ends it.
Its faults are the ones age gives any engine of the type. The intake manifold gaskets seep coolant and oil; the coil pack fails and gives a misfire on one bank; and the idle air control valve produces a hunting idle that reads as far worse than it is.
A Vulcan with a rough idle and no fault code is a vacuum leak or the IAC, and both are cheap.
It is not the Duratec 3.0, which replaced it in the same cars and is an entirely different overhead-cam design — and the two overlap by several model years in the Taurus, so the badge and the year settle nothing on their own. The tell is the pushrod valve gear: a Vulcan has no camshaft in the head.
