Generations

First generation 1982–1992

Ford's first compact pickup of its own design, replacing the imported Courier. Two Lima fours, four V6s across the run, and the only Rangers ever sold with a diesel in North America — a Perkins, then a Mitsubishi turbo. Twin I-Beam front suspension throughout.

Second generation 1992–1997

A new body on the old chassis, and the range simplified to three petrol engines. The diesels are gone and the automatics multiply — the A4LD gives way to the electronically controlled 4R44E and 4R55E, then the five-speed 5R55E.

Third generation 1997–2012

Fourteen years, a new front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The overhead-cam 4.0 arrives with the timing chain guides that make it expensive, and South American production adds three turbodiesels North America never saw.
