Also known as: 4ee1, 4ee2, 4ee, 1.7 isuzu diesel

Isuzu's 1.7 diesel — the 4EE1 and later 4EE2 — in the Mazda 323 and Protegé, and across a long list of Opel and Vauxhall cars as the 1.7 DTi and CDTi.

⚑ It is Isuzu's engine wearing other companies' badges, and that is the reason a Corsa owner and a Protegé owner are looking at the same block. opel-cdti-17 in this catalogue is the same engine's later life, and its material applies to the 4EE2.

The two generations are not interchangeable in diagnosis. The 4EE1 is indirect-injection with a mechanical pump — no rail, no filter, nothing to regenerate. The 4EE2 is common-rail with everything that follows. This catalogue's own era check refused an attempt to treat them as one page, which is how the distinction got written down.

On the 4EE1 the recurring faults are glow plugs, injection pump timing and injector nozzles; on the 4EE2 they are the EGR valve, injectors and, later, the particulate filter.

Cars fitted with this engine

4 generations, across 3 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
