Lamborghini's 6.5 naturally aspirated V12 — the L539 in the Aventador and the L545 in the Revuelto.

⚑ It is one of the last naturally aspirated V12s in production, and that is the entire design brief: no turbochargers, 8,500 rpm, and a character its makers have repeatedly said they would not trade for boost. The L545 keeps it and adds electric motors rather than replacing it.

It is a clean-sheet engine rather than a development of the 1963 V12 it succeeded, which is worth stating because the two are frequently written about as one lineage.

Everything about servicing it is factory territory. Engine-out work is routine on these cars rather than exceptional, and no independent experience of any depth exists — the honest advice is that it is a main-dealer proposition.

Cars fitted with this engine

2 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
