Mazda's SkyActiv petrol family, in 1.3 to 2.5 litre forms — the engines of the Mazda2, 3, 6, CX-3, CX-30 and CX-5, and notable for running compression ratios of 13:1 and above on ordinary petrol, achieved through a long 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and careful control of residual gas.
That high compression is the diagnostic key. These engines are more sensitive to fuel quality, carbon deposits and anything that raises combustion temperature than a conventional four, so knock complaints deserve fuel and deposits considered before hardware. Direct injection means intake-valve carbon accumulates at mileage in the usual way.
The other item worth naming is the exhaust manifold itself: its length and the tight packaging make it a known cracking point on some applications, and the resulting exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor produces fuel-trim and catalyst codes that point downstream. Check for a leak before condemning a sensor.
