The OM651's replacement and Mercedes-Benz's current four-cylinder diesel — an aluminium block with steel pistons and a NANOSLIDE cylinder coating, which is an unusual pairing and is what let the engine shed weight without losing bore durability.

The most useful thing to know is what it fixed. The OM651's timing chain sits at the rear of the engine and its wear is a well-known expensive job; the OM654 moved the chain drive and revised the arrangement, so the older engine's defining failure does not carry over. Establish which is fitted before pricing anything.

What it does carry is a dense emissions stack — close-coupled particulate filter, SCR with AdBlue, and cooled EGR — designed to keep aftertreatment hot. That makes it more tolerant of short journeys than its predecessor, but reductant quality, injector crystallisation and NOx sensor faults are the modern replacements for the mechanical failures owners used to see.

12 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
