Also known as: 13s4c, 15s4c, 15s4g, 15c4e, 20l4e, vti-tech engine, mg n series

MG's own petrol fours under SAIC — the 1.3 13S4C, 1.5 15S4C and turbocharged 15C4E and 20L4E — in the MG3, MG5, MG6 and HS.

⚑ They are not Rover K-Series engines, which is the distinction worth establishing: MG's older cars carry the K-Series and its notorious head gasket, and that page's warnings do not apply here. SAIC's engines are a clean-sheet design from the 2010s.

The VTi-Tech badge covers several of them and predicts nothing about which — this catalogue refuses it as a designation for that reason.

They are conventional modern fours: chain-driven, port-injected on the naturally aspirated versions and direct-injected on the turbos. On the turbos intake-valve carbon at mileage is expected, and the turbocharger's oil feed is what the service interval protects.

English-language documentation is thin outside the UK, where MG sells in volume — which is unusual for a Chinese-built engine and makes the UK material worth finding.

Cars fitted with this engine

3 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
