Mitsubishi's 3.0-litre V6 — fitted to the Outlander and, badged differently, to the Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 that were built on the same platform. Part of the 6B3 family that replaced the older 6G7 series.
It is an aluminium, chain-driven design with MIVEC variable valve timing, and it has no widely documented systemic failure — which changes the diagnostic posture in the usual way: an unexplained fault here is more likely to be a genuinely worn component than a known pattern, so ordinary testing beats searching for a recall.
The recurring findings are the MIVEC actuator and its oil control solenoid, which respond to oil condition and set timing codes, plus ignition coils at mileage. The rear cylinder bank sits against the bulkhead in the transverse installation, so rear-bank plugs and coils are the expensive half of any routine service, which is worth saying before the estimate rather than after.
