Also known as: d229-4, td229-4, d229, td229, mwm 229, mwm sprint
MWM is an independent diesel maker, not a marque — and its D229 family is what South American Fords, Chevrolets and Volkswagens ran on for two decades.
⚑ That is why this page exists. A D229-4 in a Brazilian F-150 looks like a Ford engine and is not; searching MWM finds the service material, the parts and the rebuild specifications, and searching Ford finds none of it. The TD229-4 is the turbocharged version of the same engine.
These are heavy, slow-turning indirect-injection engines built for working vehicles, with individual cylinder heads on much of the family — so a head gasket failure affects one cylinder rather than the bank.
Everything is mechanical: an inline injection pump, no rail and nothing to read electronically. Compression, pump timing and injector condition are the whole diagnostic vocabulary.
They are long-lived and widely rebuilt, and in their home market the parts supply is still good — which is not true of the vehicles they came in.
Cars fitted with this engine
2 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.
Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.
What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
