Toyota 1TR-FE
2.0 L · inline-4 · naturally aspirated · petrol · 2004–present
Also known as: 1tr-fe, 1tr, 2.0 tr toyota, innova petrol, hiace 2.0
Toyota's 2.0 petrol four — in the Hilux, Innova and HiAce.
It is a commercial engine in commercial vehicles, and that shapes the fault list: these are loaded, worked, and run far past any interval anybody wrote down.
It is chain-driven with variable timing on the intake, and its known item is the timing chain tensioner — a rattle for a second or two on a cold start, worsening over months. On an engine that earns its living, it is worth acting on early.
Carbon on the throttle body and the intake accounts for most running complaints, particularly on vehicles used for short urban legs, and responds to cleaning rather than to parts. The 2.7 2TR-FE is the same family one size up and has its own page here; its results apply directly.
Cars fitted with this engine
4 generations, across 1 make. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.
Information, not instruction
CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:
- The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
- What you measured, not only what you replaced.
- What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
