Toyota's fours of the 1970s and early 1980s — the 2T, 3T and 4T, and the larger 18R beside them — in the Corolla, Celica, Carina and Corona.
These predate engine management as anybody now understands it. Most are carburetted; the injected ones use early analogue systems with no fault memory worth reading. Diagnosis is compression, vacuum, timing with a light, and fuel delivery measured rather than inferred.
The twin-cam 2T-G and the turbocharged 3T-GTE are the ones people remember — the 3T-GTE powered Toyota's Group B rally cars — and they are a small minority of the family. Almost nothing written about them applies to a 3T-E in a saloon.
Timing belts on this family are interference designs and the cars are old enough that history is never known. Parts are the practical constraint, and for the twin-cam versions they are specialist rather than merely scarce.
