The front-drive coupé that ran to 2006, and the generation decides the engine story completely. The T230 cars from 1999 use the 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE, and the 2ZZ is the one worth understanding: it has a two-stage variable valve lift system whose changeover is oil-pressure driven, so low oil level or a blocked lift-bolt screen produces a car that simply will not pull past the changeover point and sets a VVTL-i code rather than any obvious mechanical symptom. The 1ZZ of the same era is known for oil consumption from clogged piston oil-return holes, which arrives as catalyst and misfire codes. The earlier ST202 and ST205 are 3S-GE and 3S-GTE and are a separate subject.
