The 1.6 1WW and 2.0 2WW D-4D — in the Avensis, Auris and Verso.
⚑ They are BMW engines. The 1WW is BMW's N47, the 2WW its 2.0 sibling, supplied to Toyota under an agreement and rebadged. BMW material describes them and Toyota material largely does not, which is the single most useful thing on this page.
So the N47's known problem applies here: the timing chain is at the BACK of the engine, against the bulkhead, and replacing it means removing the engine or the gearbox. Its guides wear and the warning is a rattle on a cold start. On a Toyota badge this is an unexpected and expensive job, and an owner who has been told "it is a Toyota, the chain is fine" has been told something about a different engine.
