Toyota RAV4

The compact SUV that outsells most cars. Later generations are heavily hybrid, so codes from the P0Axx block appear on what looks like an ordinary family crossover.

Generations

  • XA10 1994–2000

    The original compact crossover, on a platform of its own built out of Carina and Corolla parts, and the only RAV4 sold with a soft top. Both engines are 3S — the 3S-FE in almost everything, the twin-cam 3S-GE in the Japanese-market sport models.

  • XA20 2000–2005

    A wholly new car on the MC platform, and where the RAV4 first gets a diesel — the 2.0 D-4D, from June 2001. The 1AZ-FE has the same head-bolt thread-pull history as the 2AZ-FE that replaced it at the 2003 facelift, so a second head-gasket failure on either is a thread problem until proven otherwise.
