Jatco's CVT8, introduced in 2012 to replace the JF011E, and fitted to the front- and all-wheel-drive Nissans, Renaults, Mitsubishis and Suzukis of the following decade — the Altima, the X-Trail and Rogue, the Qashqai, the Sentra and the Outlander among them. It handles up to around 250 Nm.
The most useful way to understand it is as an answer to its predecessor's fault list, because that is literally what it is. The JF011E's first named failure is its step motor — the part that sets the ratio by moving the cones. The CVT8 does not have one. Its job is done by solenoids instead, and the rest of the hydraulic system was simplified in the same direction: the valve count went from twelve to eight, and the operating pressure came down.
And it runs cooler, which matters more than any other number on this page. Jatco brought the working temperature down from roughly 90–110 °C to 75–90 °C. Everything that destroys a CVT — fluid degradation, belt wear, scored cone faces — is accelerated by heat, so a successor that attacks the temperature directly is attacking the actual cause rather than the symptoms. The lock-up range and the ratio spread were widened at the same time, which is where the fuel saving came from.
It is still a pushbelt, not a chain, and it still runs a steel belt between two pairs of movable cones. So the family's fundamental limit did not change: a belt is a replaceable part and the cone faces are not, and once the belt has grooved them a new belt runs on a damaged track.
The fluid changed with the unit and the two are not interchangeable. This one takes NS-3 where the JF011E takes NS-2. A CVT fluid has to let the belt grip rather than lubricate the contact away, so using the wrong one is not a small economy — and the specification moved precisely because the rest of the gearbox did.
What the trade actually meets:
- The valve body, which is the commonest repair and is sometimes a calibration problem rather than a mechanical one — aggressive control settings have taken valve bodies out under warranty.
- Belt grooving in the drive cones, the family limit described above and the point at which a repair stops being economic.
- Wear debris clogging the oil pump's pressure relief valve, which starves the unit of the pressure it needs to hold the belt.
- Pulley bearing failure, and damage to the housing seats they sit in — the more serious version, because the housing is not a part you swap.
- Solenoids, which are sensitive to contaminated fluid in the way the whole unit is.
The honest summary against its predecessor: this is a better machine in the ways that were measurable — cooler, simpler, fewer things to go wrong in the hydraulics, and without the step motor that gave the older unit its signature fault. It did not escape what a pushbelt CVT fundamentally is. Fluid, and heat, are still the whole of what an owner controls.
