Chevrolet Vortec big block (L18 / L29)

GM's last big-block V8s — the 7.4 (L29) and the 8.1 (L18) that replaced it — in the 2500 and 3500 Suburban, Avalanche, Express and Savana.

Nothing from the small-block families transfers to these. They are a different architecture with a different bore spacing, different heads and different everything else, and the fact that a 5.7 and an 8.1 sat in the same showroom is exactly why parts get ordered wrongly. Confirm the displacement before treating anything written about a Vortec as applying.

They are low-stress engines in heavy vehicles, which is most of why so many survive at high mileage. What actually fails is bolted to the outside. Exhaust manifold bolts snap — the manifolds expand and contract far more than the heads they are bolted to — and the symptom is an exhaust leak that ticks when cold and quietens as the metal grows. Oil cooler lines weep at their crimps, and the fuel pressure regulator leaks into the vacuum line, which reads as a rich-running fault and is a two-minute check at the regulator.

The 8.1 is thirsty in a way no amount of tuning changes, and a complaint about fuel consumption on one is very often the engine working correctly.
