Chevrolet LAF (Ecotec, 2.0–2.4)

A direct-injected member of GM's Ecotec inline-four family, whose internal codename is L850. The Ecotec name is ambiguous and that ambiguity causes real misdiagnosis — it was also applied to a Buick V6 in Holden vehicles and to the last overhead-cam derivatives of the older Family II four, so "Ecotec" on a badge or in a listing does not identify the engine. Work from the code, not the name.

The direct-injected 2.4 of this period is associated with oil consumption traced to the piston rings, and with timing-chain wear that presents as a cold-start rattle and eventually as cam-to-crank correlation codes. The two compound each other in the usual way: a chain-driven engine running persistently low on oil wears its chain faster.

High-pressure fuel pump and injector faults are the third theme, and share symptoms with the low-oil condition often enough that oil level is worth confirming before any fuel-side diagnosis.
