Land Rover TD6 / SDV6 (2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesel)

The V6 diesel of the Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Jaguar XF — originating in the Ford-PSA "Lion" family as the 2.7 TDV6 and growing to 3.0 litres, in single- and twin-turbocharged forms.

Its defining failure is the crankshaft, and the cause is upstream of it. The oil pump is driven by a chain from the crankshaft, and when that drive or the oil pump itself fails, bearing damage follows quickly and quietly — the first sign is often a knock with no warning light. Because the pump drive is buried, it is the reason many of these engines are replaced rather than repaired, and it is why oil pressure and oil condition are not routine checks on this engine but primary ones.

The turbocharger's variable-geometry mechanism, the EGR coolers and the crankcase breather system are the other recurring items. On the twin-turbocharged versions the two turbochargers work in sequence, so a boost complaint needs the sequencing established before either unit is condemned.
