Peugeot DW8

PSA's 1.9 naturally aspirated diesel — the DW8 — in the 206, 306, Berlingo, Partner and Xsara.

⚑ It is not turbocharged, and that is the whole character of it. It is slow, it is loud, and it will run on very nearly anything — which is why so many are still working in vans long after the cars around them were scrapped.

There is no rail, no filter, no EGR cooler and nothing to regenerate, so almost the entire modern diesel fault list is inapplicable, and there is very little to read with a scan tool.

Its complaints are old-diesel wear. Glow plugs and their relay are the commonest cold-start fault and are testable in minutes; injection pump timing drifts with the belt and shows as smoke rather than as a running fault; and injector nozzles carbon up and knock at idle.

The timing belt drives the injection pump as well as the camshaft, so a belt service is not the job it is on a petrol engine.
