Harsh or jerky gear changes
Gear changes that thump, jolt or snatch instead of passing unnoticed.
An automatic changes gear by releasing one clutch while applying another, and the whole art is in the overlap. Release too early and the engine flares between ratios; release too late and the two fight each other, which is the bang you feel. So harshness is almost always a timing or pressure problem rather than a broken part — and that is good news, because the cheap causes come first.
Check the fluid before anything else. Low fluid lets the pump draw air, and air compresses where fluid does not, so pressures arrive late and wrong. Degraded fluid has lost the friction modifiers that make a clutch grip progressively instead of grabbing.
Some harshness is deliberate. A transmission in limp mode uses maximum line pressure because it no longer trusts its own control, which makes every engagement abrupt — that is protection, not damage. Cold fluid does the same on the first few changes of a winter morning, and clears as it warms.
One pattern worth reporting to whoever diagnoses it: whether it happens on particular changes only. Harshness confined to one or two ratios points at the elements those ratios use, which narrows the fault enormously.

What this usually means
An automatic changes gear by releasing one clutch while applying another, and the whole art is in the overlap. Pressure is set by a solenoid and delivered through a valve body. A pressure control solenoid that has drifted, or a valve bore worn enough to leak past its spool, gives the right command and the wrong pressure — and both produce harshness that is worse in some ratios than others, because different ratios use different circuits.
The fluid is doing more than lubricating. The friction modifier in the specified fluid is what makes a clutch grip progressively rather than seizing, and a fluid that has lost it — or a fluid of the wrong specification — turns a smooth engagement into a snatch. The wrong fluid causes this fault rather than curing it, which is why the specification is not a preference.
Two things that are not faults. Cold fluid makes the first few changes of a winter morning firmer by design. And a transmission in limp mode is deliberately harsh, because it has abandoned fine control in favour of a grip it can guarantee.
Report which changes are harsh. Harshness confined to one or two ratios points at the elements those ratios use and narrows the fault enormously; harshness everywhere points at line pressure, fluid, or the module's confidence in its own control.
