P07A7: Transmission Friction Element C Stuck On
Do not keep driving
Stop driving it and have it recovered. An element that will not release means the gearbox can end up demanding two gears at once — which can lock the driven wheels and is why this is a stop-driving fault rather than one to book in for next week.
Do not keep driving to "see if it clears". The parts that are supposed to be driving are working against one that is holding, and that ruins the gearbox in a very short distance.
Say what fluid was last put in and by whom. The wrong specification swells the seals, which is a genuine route into this fault — and one that a rebuild will not prevent from recurring if the same fluid goes back in.
Mention any harsh engagement, binding, or the car feeling held back before this happened.
What this code means
The third friction element is not releasing when it should.
Stuck on is a different problem from slipping and considerably more dangerous, and the reason needs stating plainly.
Every gear is a particular combination of elements applied and the rest released. An element that will not release stays applied into the next gear — so two combinations are demanded at once, and the gearbox fights itself. That is a tie-up.
A tie-up can lock the driveline. At speed, a transmission that binds behaves like a sudden brake on the driven wheels — which is why this code is treated as not drivable rather than merely a fault to book in.
It also destroys the gearbox quickly. The elements that are supposed to be driving are working against one that is holding, so the friction material and the fluid are ruined in a short distance.
The causes are hydraulic rather than about wear:
- A valve stuck in the valve body, so the apply pressure is never released. This is the commonest.
- Debris holding a valve or a check ball off its seat — and debris means something inside is already wearing.
- A broken return spring, or a piston seal swollen by the wrong fluid so it cannot retract.
- A solenoid stuck energised.
Ask about fluid specification specifically. Wrong fluid swells seals, and that is a route into this fault that a rebuild alone will not prevent from happening again.
