Stop driving and let the transmission cool — a slipping clutch destroys itself and the fluid quickly, and continuing turns a repairable fault into a rebuild. If you were towing or climbing a long hill, that may be the whole explanation; let it cool and check the fluid. Otherwise have it recovered rather than driven, and mention the fluid cooler when you book it in — a blocked cooler is a common and inexpensive cause.
What this code means
Transmission friction element F is running hotter than its limit.
An automatic gearbox has no single clutch. It has a set of them, and a gear is a combination of which ones are holding.
Each friction element — a wet multi-plate clutch or a band round a drum — is applied by hydraulic pressure, and the gearbox selects a ratio by applying two or three of them at once. Changing gear means releasing some and applying others, overlapping precisely enough that the drive never breaks and never binds.
That timing is what the module measures. It watches input and output shaft speeds and knows how long the element should take to grab. Too slow means it is slipping while it engages — and slipping generates heat in a part not designed to absorb much of it.
A single element running hot means that element is slipping, because a clutch that is holding properly generates almost no heat — the heat comes from the two halves moving against each other while they are supposed to be locked.
Slipping is how automatic transmissions die, and it is a loop that accelerates.
A slipping element generates heat. Heat degrades the fluid. Degraded fluid loses the friction properties and the pressure-carrying ability that stop the slip. Each pass round the loop makes the next one worse, and the debris shed by the element circulates into valve bodies and solenoids that were previously healthy.
Which is why these codes should not be driven on for long. A fault caught while it is still a solenoid or a fluid change is a fraction of the cost of one caught after the clutch material has gone through the hydraulics.
The module reports the element rather than the gearbox, which is more useful than it sounds: it narrows the fault to the ratios that use that element. A transmission that overheats only in certain gears is telling you which clutch is failing.
Towing, a heavy load, or a long climb will raise temperatures legitimately, and on a vehicle with a marginal cooler that alone can set this. A blocked or bypassed fluid cooler belongs high on the list — it is cheap, it is often clogged with the debris of an earlier problem, and it is easy to overlook.
Transmission fluid is the first thing to check and the thing most often skipped.
It is not a lubricant that also happens to move things — it is the working fluid of a hydraulic machine. It carries the pressure that applies every clutch, it carries the heat away, it lubricates, and it is the friction surface itself: the additive package is tuned so clutches grip smoothly rather than snatching.
So fluid that is low, old, burnt or of the wrong specification changes how the transmission behaves, and it does so before any part has failed. Burnt fluid smells burnt and looks dark; healthy fluid is translucent. Checking it costs nothing and rules out a great deal.
"Filled for life" is a claim about the warranty, not the transmission. Many sealed units have no dipstick and a manufacturer schedule that never changes the fluid, and they still wear out faster on original fluid than on serviced fluid.
