Hyundai's earlier automatics — the A4AF four-speeds, the A5SR five-speed and the A8F — in Accents, Elantras and the Kias built alongside them.
⚑ The letters encode the gearbox and the number does not. A is automatic, the digit is the ratio count, and the rest identifies the family and the torque class — so A4AF2 and A5SR2 are not successive versions of one thing. Reading the code as a version number is the commonest mistake with these.
The early A4AF is a licensed Mitsubishi design, which is the route into material that Hyundai's own documentation does not cover — the same relationship the G4C engines have.
Their complaints are the ordinary ones of a four-speed of that era: harsh or delayed engagement as fluid ages, and solenoid faults that read as mechanical wear. The fluid is specified by Hyundai and generic ATF shortens the life measurably.
The A6GF1 and A8LR1 that followed are Hyundai's own designs with their own pages here, and nothing about these transfers to them.
These are not the same gearbox at different ages. A4AF is a four-speed, A5SR a five and A8F an eight, spanning two decades of Hyundai and Kia automatics. The page is the family, and nothing about ratios or service intervals reads across it.
