Also known as: rc60, rc60f, toyota 6-speed body-on-frame manual

Toyota's six-speed manual for the body-on-frame vehicles — in the Fortuner and the Innova.

It is the R151's six-speed successor and shares its context: working vehicles, loaded, driven in traffic. Its faults are the faults of load rather than of design, and an enormous number reach very high mileages on nothing but the correct oil.

The recurring complaint is second-gear synchro wear, crunching on a fast cold change and nowhere else. A crunch into every gear is the clutch not releasing, which is hydraulic, outside the gearbox, and much cheaper.

It takes a gear oil to Toyota's specification, not ATF — the opposite of the Aisin AX-15, and the same rule as everywhere in this catalogue: read the plate rather than assume what a manual takes.

Cars fitted with this gearbox

2 generations. Only where a source names the model and the generation together — a gearbox is documented as a product far more often than as a fitment, so this list is deliberately shorter than the truth.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
