BYD Qin

The saloon that carries BYD's volume in China, and the model that made DM-i plug-in hybrid technology mainstream — which is the reason it needs its own page. DM-i is a series-parallel system where the engine usually drives a generator rather than the wheels, with a high-compression Atkinson-cycle petrol engine that is not designed to be driven hard directly; a driveability complaint therefore often traces to the electrical side or to the pack's state of charge rather than to the engine at all. The battery is BYD's own lithium iron phosphate Blade pack, whose charging behaviour differs from nickel chemistries — charging to 100% regularly is normal practice on it.
