Corolla hybrid 12 V battery: the five-minute October test
The hybrid's traction battery gets the attention, but the small 12 V battery is what actually strands Corolla hybrid owners — it boots the computers that start the hybrid system, a...
Vehicle
The world's best-selling nameplate, and the car most generic-code write-ups are implicitly about: conventional petrol drivetrains in enormous numbers, with hybrid variants joining from the E210. Its ubiquity is diagnostic gold — almost any code on a Corolla has been seen and solved by someone before.
E80 1983–1987
The Corolla goes front-drive, except for the rear-drive AE85 and AE86 coupés that outlived the rest of it. Carburettor A-series fours and the first C-series diesel.
E90 1987–1991
The widest engine range the Corolla ever had — eight petrol fours and two diesels — and the supercharged 4A-GZE at the top of it.
E100 1991–1995
Heavier and better built than the E90, and the generation of the 20-valve 4A-GE. The van and business wagon carried the E-series fours.
E110 1995–2000
The A-series gives way to the ZZ family, and the 1CD-FTV brings common rail to the Corolla. The last generation before the E120 changed the shape of it.
E120 2000–2008
The 1ZZ-FE era, whose oil-consumption habit puts P0300-family misfires and catalyst codes on old age rather than on the parts usually blamed.
E150 2006–2013
Mostly 1ZR/2ZR engines with Dual VVT-i, so camshaft position and oil-control-valve codes join the usual suspects.
E170 2012–2019
The CVT becomes common, which changes what a transmission code means — see the corpus's notes on ratio codes meaning different machines.
E210 2018–present
TNGA platform, hybrid widely available — the generation where the P0Axx hybrid block starts applying to a Corolla.

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.
Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.
