Daewoo D16 / D-20 / D24

Daewoo's five-speed manual transaxles — the D16, D-20 and D24 — in the Lanos, Nubira and the cars that became Chevrolets.

⚑ The number is the engine size these were rated for, not the gearbox's own dimension — a D16 sits behind a 1.6 — which is why the codes look like engine codes and why parts searches on them return engines.

Daewoo's own engineering descends from Opel's, and the Lanos and Nubira were built on Opel platforms. The F-series Opel gearboxes are the close relatives, and their material is far more plentiful.

After 2002 these became GM Daewoo (GMDAT) units and then simply GM's, so the same gearbox is documented under three companies' names depending on the year — which is the practical difficulty rather than anything mechanical.

They are unremarkable and reasonably durable; the complaints are the ordinary ones of a cable-shifted transaxle — linkage wear read as synchroniser wear.
