Faulty battery energy control module
The battery management controller on a hybrid or electric vehicle — and the module whose reports are treated with more caution than anything else on the car.
The reason is what it watches. A lithium traction pack has a narrow window of voltage and temperature within which it is safe; outside it, cells can be permanently damaged and, at the extreme, enter thermal runaway. So when its data becomes untrustworthy the vehicle reduces power, restricts charging or refuses to operate — which is not fussiness but the one place a wrong number could genuinely be dangerous.
It should be low on the list of suspects, because the sensing usually fails before the module does. Dozens of millivolt-level voltage sense wires and temperature sensors run through the pack, and one connector loosened by vibration or one chafed sense lead makes a single cell group report something impossible and invalidates the entire picture. That is far commoner, and far cheaper, than the controller itself.
One consequence deserves passing to the driver: where state of charge is what has become unreliable, the range display may be wrong — and the failure mode is a vehicle that stops with apparent charge remaining. Keep a large margin until it is resolved.
And the boundary is absolute: a traction pack is not to be opened by anyone not trained and equipped for high-voltage work. The corpus's usual encouragement to inspect connectors yourself stops entirely at orange cabling.
