U0413: Invalid Data Received From Battery Energy Control Module B

What to do

One question is worth asking early because it decides the size of the job: is only one section of the battery reporting problems, or several? Your battery's monitoring is split into sections. If only one is affected, the fault is local to it — its wiring or its own small module — which is far cheaper than anything pack-wide. If several are, the problem is in what they share.

And a second question worth asking before authorising work: can the affected section's sensing be replaced on its own? Some manufacturers supply those parts separately and some do not, and where they do not a sensing fault becomes a whole-battery repair. The difference in cost is very large, so it is worth establishing before anything starts.

Do not open or investigate the battery pack yourself under any circumstances.

A second battery energy module means the pack's monitoring is distributed, which is normal on larger traction batteries: the cell groups are divided into sections, each with its own sensing module, reporting up to a supervisory controller. Splitting it that way keeps the sense wiring short, which matters because those are millivolt-level measurements over a physically large object.

That architecture makes the counting test unusually informative here, and it is the fastest way to place the fault:

  • One section reporting implausibly points at that section's sense harness or its module — a localised fault, and the cheaper outcome.
  • Several sections at once points at what they share: the supervisory module, the internal network between them, or their common supply. Never several independent failures.

That distinction is worth insisting on before a pack is opened, because opening a traction battery is specialist work with real cost attached.

One consideration specific to a sectioned pack is worth knowing, because it affects what a repair can achieve. Where a single section's sensing has failed, some manufacturers supply that section's module or harness separately and some do not — and where they do not, a sensing fault becomes a pack-level repair. Establishing which applies before authorising work is a fair question, since the answer changes the cost by an order of magnitude.
