U0412: Invalid Data Received From Battery Energy Control Module A

What to do

Expect reduced power and possibly restricted charging. That caution is correct — this system watches the traction battery's voltages and temperatures, and it is the one place on the car where acting on a wrong number could genuinely be dangerous.

The important practical warning: do not trust the range or charge display until this is fixed. If the state-of-charge figure is what has gone wrong, the car may stop with apparent charge left. Keep a large margin and avoid journeys that depend on the range being accurate.

The good news is that the fault is usually not the module. Inside the battery pack there are dozens of small sense wires and temperature sensors, and one loose connector or chafed lead makes a single cell group report nonsense and invalidates everything — much commoner than a failed module, and much cheaper.

Do not open or investigate the battery pack. It needs somebody trained and equipped for high-voltage work — this is not a check to attempt yourself under any circumstances.

The battery management system is the most safety-critical reporter on an electric or hybrid vehicle, and the reason is what it is watching. A lithium traction pack has a narrow window of voltage and temperature within which it is safe. Outside it, cells can be permanently damaged and, at the extreme, enter thermal runaway. The module measures every cell group's voltage and a distributed set of temperatures, and publishes state of charge, available power and permitted charge and discharge limits.

So an implausible report here is treated with more caution than anywhere else on the vehicle, and the response is correspondingly conservative: reduced power, restricted charging, or on some vehicles a refusal to operate at all. That is not the system being fussy. It is the one place where a wrong number could genuinely be dangerous, and the vehicle declining to act on it is exactly right.

Following the family's rule, the fault is usually upstream — and here "upstream" means the sensing harness inside the pack. Dozens of voltage sense wires and temperature sensors run through the pack to the module. A single connector that has loosened with vibration, or a sense lead that has chafed, makes one cell group report something impossible and invalidates the whole picture. That is a far commoner finding than a failed module, and considerably cheaper.

One value deserves its own warning: state of charge. Where that is what has become implausible, the range shown to the driver may be wrong — and the failure mode is a vehicle that stops with apparent charge remaining. Until it is fixed, treat the range display as unreliable and keep a large margin.

High-voltage caution applies absolutely. A traction pack is not to be opened by anyone not trained and equipped for it, whatever the fault.
